Back to Nature

Our region hosts a small number of townships and villages separated by kilometres of natural bushlands, rivers and waterways, pristine seas and beaches, geological wonders dating back 500 million years and untouched habitats. There are 4300 species of flora (702 of which are endemic) and 1260 known species of fauna – mammals and marsupials, fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds some of which are entirely unique to this region. This is how you can get amongst it.

Distances are approximate and an attempt to provide an average driving distance for the day taking into account side detours to the sites mentioned.

Day 1

Darwin to Batchelor

Top up your supplies at Coolalinga before hitting the Stuart Highway and heading south.

Stretch your legs at Manton Dam, the site of Darwin’s first reliable water source which is now used for picnics and recreation.

Further down the track, take the Batchelor turnoff and head to town to the Batchelor Butterfly Farm and Petting Zoo.  You will be a hit with the kids as the resident Butterfly Man puts on a memorable tour.

Make sure you pre-book a night tour with Nina’s Wildlife Sanctuary, our local wildlife rehabilitation centre.  Be prepared for Nina’s passion and dedication to rub off and turn you into a “Wildlife Warrior”.

You can stay here or there are many accommodation options in the area.

Day 2 & 3

Batchelor to Litchfield National Park

250km includes Litchfield National Park (allows for 2 days travel)

Enjoy a couple of days exploring and swimming the sights and waterholes at Litchfield.  However, to find the wildlife we recommend to take your time and visit the lesser known and visited walks in the area.  During the dry season you can explore the 4WD trails and get off the beaten track.

Make sure you allow time for some stargazing.  The lack of lights in this area mean that the night sky comes alive.  Watch the passage of the Southern Cross and Milky Way. Can you spot any satellites or the International Space Station?

Either stay in the area or make your way to Berry Springs to be ready for an early start tomorrow.

Day 4

Litchfield National Park to Berry Springs

100 km

The Territory Wildlife Park will take up most of your day.  Gates open at 9am with the first “show” about 9.30am. Make the most of their daily shows and exhibits.  They have a café or you may wish to take your own picnic.

Cool off and put your feet up at the nearby Berry Springs Nature Park.

Find somewhere to dine and stay in the area.
