Iconic Pubs and Historic
Sites Around Litchfield

Whilst we are well known for our stunning waterfalls and waterholes, we also have a bit of a reputation for another type of waterhole – an iconic Territory Pub.  We are lucky to have quite a few in the area that offer a cool spot to relax, have a drink or two and get a great meal. Take in the stories at the various historic sites you pass along the way.  You may have to designate a sober driver for this trip.

Distances are approximate and an attempt to provide an average driving distance for the day taking into account side detours to the sites mentioned.

Day 1

Darwin to Berry Springs

60km

Visit Strauss Airstrip opposite Noonamah on the Stuart Highway – just look for the WWII planes on the side of the road.  This is one of a series of roadside airstrips that were used throughout WWII.

Next stop is the Berry Springs Tavern open for lunch and dinner every day, with a great playground for the kids, live music Saturday nights or join them for Sunday brunch.

Nearby take a swim at the Berry Springs Nature Park and visit the critters at the Territory Wildlife Park before finding the Darwin River Tavern. Open daily 10am to late with a Kids Zone and a variety of animals to meet from an emu, goat and even a crocodile.  There is even a Supermarket, Petrol Station and Post Office in the complex.

Find somewhere nearby to stay the night.

Day 2

Berry Springs to Batchelor

250 km incl Litchfield National Park

Hit the road and drive to Litchfield National Park to swim under waterfalls and explore – be warned there is so much to do here that you might want to add another day in this area.

In Batchelor, the Batchelor museum tells tales of the towns colourful past – from it’s early days as a Research Farm, to the large role Batchelor Airstrip played in WWII and then it’s later re-invention as Australia’s first Uranium mine.

Nearby is the Lil’Ripper Café, Bar and Bistro at the Litchfield Motel.  Extensively remodelled the Lil’ Ripper pays tribute to the mining heritage of the area.

Find somewhere nearby to stay the night.

Day 3

Batchelor to Adelaide River

50 km

Everyone remembers the movie Crocodile Dundee right? Well meet Charlie the Buffalo that had a supporting role in the movie.  Charlie passed away of old age in 2000 but the locals weren’t about to let the Territory’s greatest movie star fade away, so you’ll find him ready for a selfie on the front bar of the Adelaide River Inn. Open for lunch and dinner.

Do yourself a favour and visit the Adelaide River War Cemetery and Adelaide River Railway Museum whilst in this town.

Book a room here or find somewhere nearby to stay the night.
