The laid back greeting and cool shady trees that welcomes you at Adelaide River today is a far cry from the days when the town hosted over 30,000 Australian and US soldiers and was a significant outpost for Australia’s World War II efforts. Many of their stories remain for you to discover around the town at the Railway Museum, the Adelaide River War Cemetery and Heritage Walk.
Adelaide River has one of those “must visit” iconic pubs and the Adelaide River War Cemetery is a sobering reminder of the Top End’s World War II battles. Plan ahead if you will be in the area around the first Saturday of June, for a fun-filled Cup weekend at the Adelaide River Races (horse racing) draws visitors from far and wide.
Further afield, take some time out exploring Robin Falls, the Hot Springs, Butterfly Gorge. Visit the Merrepen Arts Centre or charter a fishing guide to catch that elusive barramundi on the Daly River.
